BALLOONING
Those who enjoy the slowest growing sport in America -- the medieval madness of ballooning -- have their moments, too. Such as not knowing where the hell they're going. Ballooning is the greatest way of getting from one point on the earth to another point provided you don't care where that spot is, say its enthusiasts.
Frank Reed, of Sunset Balloon Flights, in California has flown passengers over the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and over Mount McKinley in Alaska, taken wedding parties and graduation groups and stroke patients aged 96 in wheelchairs and kids as young as two years held, tight, in mothers' arms. All had a sense of wonder. A single flight costs about $125 to $145 but if it whets your appetite you're into prices of about $12,000 to $30,000 for your own balloon.

"I love the serenity," says Carol Aschenbrener, a visitor from Iowa. Her first flight in her own balloon was one of the happiest days of her life. "It's such a peaceful way to view the world and the better side of life," she says. "You don't see debris and grime; you don't notice the paint is peeling on the doll's houses below you. Ballooning blows the stinkoff."
