ESCAPING THE GUYS: THE BELLINGHAM WHATCOM COUNTY GIRLS’ DRIVE
Story and photography
by Nancy Allen

There are many vineyards in this area but one of the oldest is Mt. Baker Winery. There, not only does owner, Randy Finley pour great wine for his guests but entertains them with stories of the past with follows-up suggestions for where tourists might go next.

His suggestions bring visitors to Everybody’s Store where everybody can find just about anything they want including homemade breads and cheeses and free advice from co-owner Jeff Margolis. Girls lucky enough to be there in June would be advised by Jeff to attend the annual Deming Logging Show where very handsome loggers compete in rolling, chopping and sawing logs as well as shimmying up poles and showing us, girls, muscles we hadn’t seen in a long time.

The professionalism and pride loggers demonstrate in their work mirrors the friendliness and pride in their state that Washingtonians show visitors. What happy country roads.

Our three day girls’ drive was packed with fun and indulgencies, good food and great conversation, attractive accommodations and absolutely gorgeous scenery. What more could two girls want? Especially if their guys were away doing the Men’s Trip.
