SAN DIEGO TO LONDON THE EASY WAY
Story and photography
by Margaret & Eric Anderson
British Airways (BA) goes way back to one year after
the end of World War I (the war to end all wars). BA's forerunner
was Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited and its first flight carried
one passenger and a cargo of newspapers and Devonshire Cream from
London to Paris in two and a half hours on a single engine de Havilland
DH4A.

 |
Now, 82 years later, in the very
latest flight pioneered by this airline that is called by many business
travelers "the best in the world," 254 passengers are carried
from San Diego to London in less than ten and a half hours in the
most up-to-date commercial airplane in existence, the Boeing 777.
This plane is not the biggest in the skies but it is ideal for San
Diego's purposes. It can take off with a full load of fuel comfortably
from the relatively short runway at Lindbergh Field and fly at Mach
0.83 to its destination.

British Airways (800 247 9297 britishairways.com)
has made a big investment in this flight from our city. It took courage
- and money. BA is spending $970 million over the next two years to
bring its flights into the 21st Century, the largest customer investment
in airline history. Some of the capital will go into new planes, some
into making its existing cabins more comfortable (some Business Class
seats, for example, will be converted to the world's first fully flat
beds for travelers on long haul trips), and some into upgrading new
routes.

Flight #2274 which departs San Diego
at 4:40 pm each day and arrives the next day in Gatwick at 11 am is
such a flight (London is eight hours ahead of San Diego). This tremendous
time and convenience bonus to our city will rely on European travelers
who wish to come here on vacation or on business because of all the
high tech companies (like Qualcomm and Gateway) that are located in
San Diego.

But the planes have to be busy returning to London,
too, and this is where those who have deferred flying to London
in the past because it seemed so far away need to realize how much
simpler BA has made their vacation plans with this flight. London
Gatwick has BA planes heading out for the entire breadth of Europe
so BA #2274 is more than the plane to London, it is the magic carpet
to take us easily to places that perhaps we've only dreamed of before:
accessible Athens, historic Paris, romantic Rome.
