Love horses? Fancy a trail ride? Figure you could herd
cattle with the best of them? The Wigwam will arrange it for you even
for novices and send you off on a desert jeep ride too. You'll never
be bored at this place. |
 |
The Boulders, Carefree (Toll free
888 GRAN-BAY) -- in contrast to the Wigwam which lies 20 miles to
the west of downtown Phoenix -- sits a similar distance to the north.
Surrounded by the high Sonoran Desert, this, too, is a place for golfers
-- and lovers. |
 |
Eighty five percent of the guests are golfers come
for the two Jay Morrish-designed golf courses but this luxury resort
doesn't reveal the percentages for its lovers. |
Sprawling over 1300 acres amongst 12 million
year-old granite boulders, with 160 individual guest casitas, it is
the ultimate desert hideaway. Guests can be as active as they wish,
joining a rock climbing clinic followed by a well-earned spa treatment
by day, for example, and exploring the desert by night with state-of-the-art
night vision equipment.
|
 |
The Phoenician, Scottsdale (800 888
8234) is a contrast. If the Boulders is understated, impeccable good
taste, the Phoenician on Camelback Road, with its 468 rooms in its
main building and another 169 scattered around its 250 acres, is boisterous,
beautifully delivered fun.

There's a lot going on at all times in this resort:
a 27-hole championship golf course, 12 tennis courts, and an acclaimed
spa -- for starters. This is a great place, too, to bring your family
especially if they deserve luxury: |
|
a half-day at the Funicians Kids Club with lunch is
$40. Later in the day, send them off for a sundae at the Ice Cream
Shop beside the entrance and enjoy for yourselves the exquisite
Phoenician afternoon tea -- expensive but as well done as any we've
had on the West coast.
