HAVING THE HOTS FOR PHOENIX
Story and photography
by Margaret & Eric Anderson

The Royal Palms, Phoenix (800 672 6011) is a superb desert oasis. If one of the Phoenician's strengths is its children's programs, the perfection of the Royal Palms, about six blocks further west, is its privacy, its small size, its hidden corners, its idyllic surroundings, its Mediterranean feel, its almost Old World ambience.
It was in fact created from a private home, the 1929 Spanish-style mansion of Delos Cooke, a Cunard Steamship financier. It now has 116 rooms and casitas, a pool and a great restaurant. There are also many shopping centers with cool cafes as you drive east or west a few blocks on Camelback Road.

The Royal Palms is just right for those who come to Phoenix for the right reasons: to golf, explore the desert, do a little shopping, enjoy the warmth, and simply relax. If you are putting too many miles on your car, you're not really getting the Phoenix vacation.
