SHOOTING UP FILM IN SANTA FE
Story and photography
by Eric Anderson

santafe_17_sm.jpg She then pans for gold amongst the slides we took the previous day. We've improved; she's pleased. The remarks flow readily: "Nice picture-tells a story. A different approach-works well. Oh dear, the problem here is you've chosen to photograph the ugliest building in town, so ugly the locals call it The Ugly Building. Mm, for this close up I'd have gone closer. Ah! The problem of insignificant clouds and no-no trees -- it's not brain surgery photography but it's pleasing."

On day 6 we're off to Taos Pueblo, 60 miles north of town, a community lived in by Indians for more than 900 years. The bus and guide provided is one of the highlights of the week -- a whole day with an escort to photograph the real New Mexico. We return at 7 p.m. and turn in our film -- the average student shoots about 10 rolls in a week, about what Lisl on assignment shoots in a day.

The final morning covers hints on turning pro and shooting stock. Turning pro is risky, but, says Lisl, "You can compete with a white collar career if you do stock and do it well."

Doctors shouldn't switch professions simply because they're sick of lawyers; they'll meet them as photographers. Most persons know to get model releases but property releases? Photographers have been sued in West Palm Beach, Florida for using someone's real estate as a backdrop, even for including a person's dog or horse in a published photograph. The evening brings our farewell dinner and our final critique. The results are impressive. We've all learned something, not everything, but we're more confident now around people.

"I really feel," says Landt, "that people, the subjects in your photos, are like horses -- they can sense if you're in control and know what you want. Kodak and Fuji tell travelers they've got to get home with pictures. Tourists get frightened -- of people, of weather, of failure. Get rid of fear and you'll be as happy as Lisl is when she's caught the unexpected. When she's captured a surprise."
