Snow boarding has become a big attraction and lessons at Heavenly and elsewhere have become very popular. Tahoe also offers 31 miles of trails for cross-country skiers and has many places for snowshoeing. Ice-fishing is easily arranged and horse-drawn sleigh rides as well, a perfect way for children to end the day.

And there's a lot for adults to do in Tahoe as well. By day, there's Genoa Lakes Golf Course and March and April are great months for "Ski & Tee" vacations. Nearby Carson City also offers great golf year-round and interesting historical sites in addition such as the Nevada State Museum, the Nevada Children's Museum and the Nevada Railroad Museum.

And once the night draws in, the restaurants and casinos beckon. The Las Vegas casinos have established a presence in Tahoe and created new dining and stage entertainment for the two million visitors Tahoe gets each year.

The shows vary from Harveys Cabaret with "Hard Body Rock," its adult musical review, all this winter but show is dark April 9-30 to the South Shore Room at Harrah's (800-427-7247) that will have entertainers from Bobby Vinton Mar 17-18 through Kevin James, TV's King of Queens May 26-27.

All the big resorts have ski packages with especially good mid-week rates that vary from two nights at Caesars Tahoe (800-648-3353) with breakfast and lifts tickets for two at S150 per person, to a higher priced package at Embassy Suites (800-988-3724) of one night in a two-roomed suite with breakfast, lift ticket (or snow tours or one-hour massage) and evening cocktails for $129 per person. Embassy Suites Resort in South Lake Tahoe has won awards for the Number 1 Embassy Suites in the country and, located on the California side of the state line, is the closest to the new downtown gondala at Heavenly and it's much quieter than the casino resorts.

Finally, if you want someplace romantic to stay in Tahoe, consider Fantasy Inn at 3696 Lake Tahoe Blvd (800-367-7736) with its 53 rooms, all different, most with special themes such as Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra, Arabian Nights and - wait for it - Graceland.

And if winter is not for you, scheduled for July 21 through August 26, 2001 is the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, held in a natural sand ampitheater; this year's Festival is featuring evening performances of The Comedy of Errors and The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
