CROSSING THE POTOMAC: WASHINGTON FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE RIVER
Story and photography
by Margaret & Eric Anderson

Some of the monuments in Arlington are massive. The Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial based on the most famous photograph of World War II can raise goose bumps. This, the largest cast-bronze statue in the world, features 32-foot-tall figures erecting a 60-foot-tall bronze flagpole. The sculpture was designed by sculptor Felix W. de Weldon, then on duty with the U.S. Navy, from the Pulitzer prize-winning photo by news photographer Joe Rosenthal. The M-1 rifle and carbine carried by two of the figures are 16 and 12 feet long, respectively. Seen from the west side it carries the eye across the river to the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Capitol beyond and reminds us of our heritage.

Arlington National Cemetery receives four million guests every year, many searching for a loved one or a famous figure. In the shadow of the Robert E. Lee mansion lies the body of President Kennedy; the flame always burning. On the slope above him is the simpler grave of his brother, Robert, both tragically dying the same way, from an assassin's bullet. Nearby is the grave of America's most decorated World War II veteran, Audie Murphy, a real live hero who later became a celluloid one in Hollywood.

On a wooded island accessible only from the northbound lane of the Geo. Washington Memorial Parkway in Arlington stand a tribute to Teddy Roosevelt, larger than life as the man himself was.
